Bob Payne has a long history with Jim Henson and his company. He and Jim were friends from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD, and Bob performed with Jim and Jane Henson on their local Washington show, Sam and Friends and other early efforts. After working with famed puppeteer Bil Baird in the 1960s, Bob joined Jim in New York as a puppet builder on myriad projects including The Muppet Show, Muppet feature films, The Dark Crystal, assisting in the construction of the Pod people and the slaves, and Fraggle Rock. Bob also continued puppeteering on an array of shows and films. For The Dark Crystal, he performed as part of the Pod people unit and as skekOk the Scroll-Keeper. Being cast in the Scroll-Keeper role was particularly appropriate as Bob was instrumental in the establishment of The Jim Henson Company Archives in the 1980s.
