Seeing as the official Dark Crystal site is still very much a work in progress, I’ve started this thread as a way of suggesting possible additions based on official DC sources and correcting any possible errors.

Suggestions

* Mention in the Gelfling page that the name Gelfling is a transliteration of Ghel-lflainnk, which means “those who live without knowledge of the future”. (World of the Dark Crystal)

* Mention that the Crystal Bats were originally called Xahgniathanor, before being bred by the Skeksis to seek out Gelflings. (World of the Dark Crystal)

* Mention that Haakskeekah is also the name of the stone itself, and that it was an object of worship for the Skeksis before they discovered the Crystal’s ability to drain essence. (World of the Dark Crystal)

* Add the Rakkida (vicious, Mounder-eating predators) in the Creatures of Thra section. (Legends of the Dark Crystal, vol. II)

* Add further Skeksis terms to the Languages section. A list of them can be seen here: http://www.darkcrystal.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/24/

* Mention the influence of Jane Roberts’ Seth Material in the Making Of section. David Odell mentions in the second volume of Creation Myths that Roberts’ writings were crucial to Henson’s conception of The Dark Crystal.

* List character voice actors, as well as performers.

Corrections

* Respelling of Podling/Aughra language entries. In Aughra’s case, Boojay is actually the French bougez, meaning move. The Podling language is actually Serbo-Croatian, and its spelling can be viewed in this thread here: http://www.darkcrystal.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/6/

* Misspelling of vestigial on the Skeksis entry in the Glossary.

I was going to email this but .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) doesn’t want to take my emails so…

These are my opinions on the expansion of the world of Thra. First and foremost I am one of the few people who read every word on the Terms of Service. I understand that your terms are similar to many other websites. I know all to well the Rules of Author Quest. The material submitted is yours to do with as you will and the contributer has no rights to any royalty… So essentially with Author Quest you are getting a massive amount of free ideas to incorporate into the Dark Crystal cannon. That is genius in a shady way. Encouraging fans in the forums to give ideas and talk about their books while stating in the ToS that you can use the ideas for anything, anywhere, and anytime, while denying any legal burden to handle disputes of material between members… The Skeksis would be proud.

Anyways now that I have established my understanding: Too many fantasy worlds have races and sub-races that are created but barely given any depth. Please do not let this happen. The Gelfling clans must ALl be “given life”. It is my understanding that Froud wanted to expand upon the languages, this would please fans greatly. Tolkienites speak Elvish and Trekkies speak Klingon. Notice how much money those two have pushed? How loyal the fans are? When a fan wants to delve into a fantasy world/environment they expect to learn new things and ideas, a language is a delicacy. The Gelfling name rule in accordance with gender is a great start (males end in a constanat and females a vowel). If you really want the Skeksis language to be a corruption of the urSu’s language, the latter MUST be created first. Look at Tolkien Elvish/Black Speech. In our world it is the natural order… for something to be corrupted it had to exist in a pure form before the corruption. This will encourage fans to study the languages, being able to compare and contrast the two.

I am aware now after the realease of Author Quest why The Dark Crystal 2 and the tabletop rpg was put on hold. The era’s before the movie and after the split of the two races is the best rp environmentt. With the Gelfling clans and the traits for each, it makes a better class system. But of course you know this. Just don’t release the game with simple mechanics, the hardcore fans are older than 13. (Im 22 and I am a younger fan) This goes along with fleshing out the Gelfling clans and languages of Thra. I know you are aware of the fan made systems, they all lack. I would suggest a d20 game rather than a d6 game. The d20 mechanics (not the Wizards, just in general) allow for more in-depth gameplay. More dice types= more choices and actions. If you plan to compete in the tabletop rpg world don’t use a simplified system. If you do fans and tabletop gamers in general will just take your system and enhance it. I have seen this happen time and time again. As an experienced Game Master I have done the same thing. Why play a watered down version when you can make a better one?

Then we have the map for the movie… if the Swamp of Sog is 600 yorgs wide the whole map is only 2400 yorgs wide and 1500 yorgs high. The swamp takes up roughly 1 1/2 squares if 1 1/2 squares is 600 yorgs, at 6 squares wide and 4 high… you get my results. If a yorg = a mile the map is smaller than the USA… Then you have the movie. Jen travelled from the Valley of the Mystics to Aughra’s observatory in 1 day on foot. If you are going to release a tabletop rpg these are big problems

Just Don’t skimp the details!

The link at the bottom of the website for Community goes to http://www.darkcrystal.com/community.php

You guys have sone serious spammer problems, ever think of using word verification to weed out the bots? For forum replies. Or banning ip addresses? Or post verification? (User posts but the post has to be approved before it is listed on the forums)

I did a search for community moderators (Members List) there are zero Community Moderators listed… so are there no Community Moderators or…

Thanks for your input on the site; we’re now looking into the broken Contact email address.

I’ve merged your suggestions into the existing thread for comments, in an effort to keep discussions grouped together. I hope you find this acceptable.

Dear Team,

Thank you for this website. It has given me a crash course in the canon even though it’s also raised many, many questions! smile As someone who has been obsessed by the film but never even knew there were comics and other books (don’t know how I missed that!), well, this has been a brilliant portal.

Now for the suggestions - please take these in the spirit of adoration and desperation (the latter being my late discovery of your marvellous contest and a frenzied attempt to educate myself):

1. Please make a long, scrolling page of the entire timeline from the beginning of the known (official) canon to the beginning of the film (I note there is already a page which charts some of the timeline but I would love to see all the little stories and characters plotted on a line with expandable little boxes or pop-up windows to let you delve deeper, should you wish).

2. Please consider creating a map page which would show how all the different locations relate to each other and you could also mouse-over them and get a box which would link you to the page(s) where the locations are discussed.

Your millionth Number One Fan.

How about an UPDATES page? It would be nice to know what changes are being done to the site.

I have a question / concern - how do we post pictures?  I’ve tried to post images directly with html code, tried as an attachment, and even tried a simple link - each time it was blocked for some reason…

Received an email from Maryanne - she is looking into the photo posting issue.

By the way, is it just me or are the forums a bit of a ghost town?  People seem to be reading but not posting much anymore…
