Dave Goelz

Biography

Dave Goelz, a core member of Jim Henson's puppeteer team, performed the Garthim Master Skeksis and the little creature Fizzgig in The Dark Crystal. Goelz began his career in California as an industrial designer working on John Deere tractors. He was with the Hewlett Packard Company and making puppets on his own time when he approached Jim Henson in 1972. Goelz set his sights on becoming a performer, but jumped at the chance to work with Henson as a puppet builder in New York, starting with development of characters for a never-realized Broadway Show. Goelz performed on The Muppet Valentine Show in 1974 and his immense talents as a puppeteer became apparent. He continued making puppets, including Zoot and others for The Muppet Show, but soon became essential to the performing team. As Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Goelz has been integral to every Muppet series and feature film. He also performed on Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, Labyrinth, two Sesame Street features, The Jim Henson Hour, The Secret Life of Toys, Dinosaurs, Jim Henson's Animal Show with Stinky and Jake, and as Boober Fraggle and Travelling Matt on Fraggle Rock. Goelz continues as a performer, most recently in The Muppets and The Muppets Most Wanted films, and is an active participant in the activities of The Jim Henson Legacy.
